Parameter Action Part 6 : Combined Scroll

In the earlier part of this series parameter action we discussed about using them for multiple scenarios such as chart drilldown , swap sheets and measures, show contributions and compare values. In case you have not gone through them you can do that by visiting them here.

In this blogpost we will see yet another application of parameter actions , to use them in enabling combined scroll for two sheet.

Imagine you two sheets with same dimension ( customer name ) and different measures ( sales and discount ). Traditionally these two sheets would have scrolls for each of them and these scroll are independent of each other. It becomes difficult for the end user to scroll each of these individually. With parameter actions we can enable sync in these two sheets and control them using a single scroll. Lets see how we do that step by step.

Step 1 : Import sample super store data in Tableau.

Step 2 : Create one sheet with sales of customer by dragging sales in columns and customer name in rows. Sort the customer names alphabetically.

Step 3 : Create another sheet for quantity by dragging quantity in columns and customer name in rows.

Step 4 : Create a parameter for combined scroll as under.

Step 5 : Create a calculated to have the same records displayed in the sheets Sales and Quantity.

Place this calculated field in filter for both the sheets Sales and Quantity.

Step 6 : Create a sheet for scroll that controls the scrolling of both the sheets as under. In the rows type in Index(). Place this on color as well as details mark by dragging it using the control button. Place the customer name on the detail mark and you will have the your sheet as under.

Step 7 : Bring these three sheets on the dashboard side by side. Click on dashboard actions and select change parameter values . Set the action as under:

Once you have set the parameter actions you can hover on the scroll sheet and you will see both the sheets scroll together. Here is an interactive version of the above steps.

I hope this tutorial was a good read for all of you as our previous posts on parameter actions. Do let me know in case you are not able to follow any of the steps mentioned above.
